Metal Treating for Cutlery and Hand Tool Manufacturing

Our heat treating capabilities are built around the specific demands of cutlery and hand tool manufacturing, where edge retention, toughness, and dimensional consistency aren't optional. Every process below is selected for its direct impact on blade and tool performance.

• Hardening and Quench Hardening: The foundation of any high-performing blade or tool. We heat steel to its austenitizing temperature, then rapidly quench it to form a martensitic structure that delivers the hardness necessary for long-lasting edge retention. Process parameters are dialed in to the specific alloy, whether that's a carbon steel utility blade or a high-alloy stainless cutlery grade.
• Cryogenic Treatment: Applied immediately after quenching, cryogenic treatment drives retained austenite in the steel to a more stable martensitic state. For blades and cutting tools, this translates to improved wear resistance and dimensional stability, particularly for higher-alloy and stainless grades where retained austenite is a common challenge.
• Annealing: Used to soften steel before machining or reworking, and to relieve residual stress introduced by prior forming or grinding operations. Our atmospheric furnaces allow us to precisely control cooling rates, producing a consistent, workable microstructure without surface degradation.
• Tempering: Hardened steel without tempering is too brittle to be useful. We follow every hardening cycle with a controlled tempering process that relieves internal stress and brings the steel to a hardness profile suited to its end use. A chef's knife and a heavy-duty pry bar require different hardness targets, and we treat them accordingly.
• Corrosion Resistance Enhancement: We apply specialized treatments to improve the corrosion resistance of metal tools, extending their lifespan and maintaining their functional integrity even in challenging environments.
• Atmosphere Carburizing and Carbonitriding: For hand tools where surface hardness matters more than through-hardness, such as pliers, wrenches, and similar hardware, our atmosphere furnaces deliver controlled case hardening. Carburizing and carbonitriding diffuse carbon (and nitrogen) into the steel surface, creating a hard, wear-resistant case over a tough, ductile core.
